Viridian Pools owner’s guide to waking up their pool.
As the first warm breeze of 2026 rolls in, your backyard is about to reclaim its title as the centerpiece of your home. At Viridian Pools, we spent the winter designing and building new retreats, but for our existing clients, this season is about one thing; “the startup”.
While we no longer provide weekly maintenance, we want to ensure the masterpiece we built for you is treated with the precision it deserves. Getting your pool ready for the first splash doesn’t have to be a headache. It’s simply about a few key moves to ensure your system is healthy and your water is perfect.
The clean slate
Before you even think about the water, look at the surroundings. Winter has likely left its mark on your deck and surrounding areas.
- The Move: Clear the deck and the top of your cover completely before removing it.
- The Reason: This keeps winter’s “leftovers” silt, leaves, and tannins out of your clean pool. Think of it as protecting the canvas before you start to paint. A clean opening saves you days of filtration work later.
Waking up the system
Your pool’s equipment needs a good post winter checkup.
- The Water Level: Ensure the water is back to its prime position usually about halfway up the skimmer or tile line. Your pump needs a healthy water level to operate efficiently.
- The Filter Refresh: This is the most important step for clear water. Whether you use cartridges or sand, start the season with a deep-clean or backwash. A clogged filtration system makes your pump work twice as hard and costs you more in electricity.
- The Reboot: Restart the system on; listen and observe. You’re looking for a smooth, quiet hum, consistent water flow, and no leaks. If you hear air whistling or see drips at the equipment pad, it’s usually just a dry O-ring that needs a bit of lubricant.
Achieving water harmony
We often get asked how to get that “resort-quality” water feel. It’s not about adding more chemicals; it’s about balance. The Simple Science: Instead of just shocking the pool, focus on the foundation. We recommend the Orenda Method for pool water chemistry. Think of this program as the foundation for holding your water steady.
- Protecting Your Investment: Proper balance isn’t just for the swimmers; it protects your pool’s finish and your heater. Water that is out of balance is “hungry”—it will try to find what it needs by eating away at your stone, grout, or equipment. Keeping it balanced keeps your pool looking new for decades.
Equipment review
Spring is also the time to walk your equipment pad. Identifying any small wear-and-tear issue in April prevents a major mechanical failure in July.
1. The Filtration System
- Deep Clean: Remove and spray down filter cartridges or backwash your sand system.
- Pressure Gauge Check: Note the “clean” PSI. If it’s 10 PSI higher than usual, your filters may need replacement.
- Air Relief Valve: Open the manual air relief on top of the filter tank until a steady stream of water shoots out.
2. Pumps & Circulation
- Water Level: Ensure the pool water is at the halfway point of the tile line so the pump can “prime” properly.
- Basket Inspection: Clear any debris from the pump strainer basket.
- Lid O-Ring: Check the rubber seal on the pump lid. If it’s dry or cracked, apply a silicone-based lubricant to ensure an airtight seal.
- Variable Speed Settings: Verify your automation app is set to higher filtration hours as the water warms.
3. Heating & Sanitization
- Heater Test-Fire: Run the heater for 15 minutes now. Listen for unusual knocking sounds and ensure the exhaust is clear of debris or nests.
- Salt Cell Inspection: If you have a saltwater system, check the cell for white calcium scale. Clean with a mild acid solution if plates are bridged.
- Chlorine Generator: Ensure your control panel isn’t throwing “Low Salt” or “No Flow” codes.
4. Automation & Safety
- Valve Actuators: Toggle between “Pool” and “Spa” modes to ensure the motorized valves turn fully and stop correctly.
- Lighting Check: Test all LED zones at dusk to ensure no bulbs or drivers were affected by winter moisture.
- GFCI Test: Press the “Test” and “Reset” buttons on your equipment pad outlets to ensure all electrical safety trips are functional.
Your Season, Simplified
The goal of a great spring startup is to get the technical details out of the way now so you don’t have to think about them in June. By focusing on a clean opening, a healthy system, and balanced water, you set the stage for a summer of effortless enjoyment.
